 11/11/2004 WORKSHOP by VISION

 The Great Convergence

The institutional, industrial and technological conditions for the construction of ICT based transport systems

Vision, the independent think tank dedicated to studying decisive issues for the “birth” of Information Societies, promotes an international seminar on the future of “intelligent systems for mobility”, starting from the conclusions of its research on the impact of Information and Communication technologies in the transport sector and in the automotive industry.
The car transformed into an object capable of receiving, processing and transmitting information in real time; a “mobility system” able to continually adjust its configuration and instantaneously to find the most efficient one: the technologies and the “network” connecting all technologies promise to solve some of the problems the Industrial Society had accustomed us to: the huge waste of time, safety, energy produced by congestion every day.
But what are the “political” conditions and the legislative interventions, the industrial choices and the additional technological developments needed before the Information Society can unfold its “potential”? What is the real demand for “technology”, efficiency and progress by motorists and citizens and how can important portions of public opinion be involved in a debate that all too often seems to be the exclusive domain of a few specialists?
Vision’s hypothesis is that the “future”, so anxiously awaited, often celebrated too early, passes through a “convergence” of the languages, objectives, actions of “worlds” that are still far apart from each other: local and international political decision-makers; producers of automobiles and “transport services”; providers of technologies and “networks”; a broader audience than the one heretofore involved in debates on technologies Vision’s seminar, starting from the conclusions of the book on “The Machine that Changed the World” (Fazi 2004), proposes an international debate among some of the potential – different, diversified – players in a process of change that has already begun.
